San Miguel de Tucumán
Our trip begins in Tucumán´s capital city, famous for its
intense commercial and industrial life and also, why not, because of its
nightlife with discos, restaurants, cafés and casino. During the
day, it offers a variety of walks, squares and flowery parks that justify
that this small province (the smallest in Argentina) is known as «The
garden of the republic».
To the east the plains extend and to the west are the mountains, like
the Calchaquíes summits and the Nevados of Aconquija.
The central part that crosses the Sali' river, is ideal due to its fertile
ground and the appropriate climate for the development of agriculture.
From Tafí del Valle to Cafayate
As a compulsory stop, the zone of the Indio, with its homonymous monument,
lodges an interesting artisan fair full of mates, looms and souvenirs
of the zone. You can also visit the towns of Mollar or Tafi, in Tucumán.
Amaicha
Situated in the Calchaquíes Valleys, on the
Amaicha River, it’s well known for its production of home made wine,
alfajores, turrones and quesillos. You can buy tweeds of alpaca and vicuña.
It has a comfortable camping. Nearby you can visit the Pachamama Complex,
that lodges a museum with 4 rooms dedicated, respectively, to ethnology,
geology, tapestry and painting and a patio with sculptures; Los Zazos
- 5 km away-, little settlement that produces hand made products and patero
wines.
El Remate - 8 km away -, opening between the mountains with cascades where
the Amaicha River is born. Also, the Ampimpa dam, the viewpoint of the
Calchaquí valley. The Quilmes Ruins (in Tucumán) considered
the biggest pre Hispanic settlement in Argentina.
Cachi
Cachi is a little town located 157 km away from Salta
City and 2280 meters above the sea level that is born in the union of
the rivers Cachi and Calchaquí. It has the characteristic mixture
of the towns of the north: the colonial styles but mixed with details
of the pre-Columbian art. As far as the gastronomy is concerned, there
are cafes, restaurants and dining rooms near the main square where you
can taste different local dishes: humitas, tamales, locro or empanadas.
What to visit: the archaeological museum (where you can
see objects in ceramics of the old indigenous of the zone), the San José
Church, the Old Town, the viewpoint, the cemetery and 9 of July square.
A few kilometers away you can visit the town of Cachi Adentro.
Cafayate
It is the entrance to the Calchaquíes valleys.
Known as "the paradise where the sun and the good wine reign",
this zone of the valleys has a combination of temperature and humidity
that create an ideal microclimate for the development of the torrontés
grape. There are several warehouses that can de visited for free like
Bodega la Rosa, Etchart and Domingo Brothers, Banda or Nanni, to know
the manufacturing process and to taste the wine from the barrel.
What to visit: the museum of the wine, the cathedral, the archaeological
museum deprived Brave Rodolfo, the artisan market, the tinajas and vessels
of Cristófani. Only 7 Kilometers away, at the East Side of the
Colorado River, you can visit the cave paintings and you can try fishing
trout.
On the way to Alemanía
Alemanía is a locality situated mid way between Cafayate
and Salta. From Cafayate to Alemanía you can find
the quebrada of Las Conchas River. This route is worth visiting with its
unique formations of rock with funny shapes and names such as The Dunes,
The Castles, The Obelisk, The Friar, The Frog, Priest, The amphitheater
and The Devil’s Throat.
Molinos
This village of an irregular layout with houses of adobe and earth tiles,
with galleries and porches offers different points that are worth visiting:
the church, historical monument, constructed in 1639, where rests the
mummified corpse of the last realistic governor Don Nicolás Severo
the Isasmendi. In front of the church is the country house (today Inn
of Molinos). 8 km away is the indigenous ruins of the tribe of the Chicoanas
of the pre-Hispanic time. Great breeding farms of vicuñas.
Cuesta del Obispo - Recta de Tin Tín
Cuesta del Obispo is a road that connects Chicoana with a place called
Piedra del Molino (stone of the mill), that is a small chapel in the mountain’s
summit. The maximum height is of 3410 over the sea level just where the
Recta de Tin Tin ends. 11 km in straight line over flat land, after the
Payogasta plain. During the trip, you pass through all kinds of landscapes,
with green, red, lilac, black and yellow mountains.
Salta City – Historical trip in the city
The city, built in the Lerma Valley, stands out because of its colonial
style, its one or two story building, its narrow streets and sideways,
all surrounded by mountains. Its downtown is full of national historical
monuments (most of them were declared in 1941):
- San Francisco Church: finished in 1625 it was rebuilt
several times, the last one being in 1870, when the architect Luis Giorgi
modified the front by building the tower, the highest in South America
with its 53 meters high.
- Cabildo: it dates from the foundation times, even though
successive constructions replaced the one of 1582. Today it is a museum,
and keeps valuable collections that allow visitors to appreciate the historical
past of the province.
- San Bernardo Convent: It’s the most antique of
the religious buildings in Salta. At the beginning it was the San Bernardo
Ermit, and afterwards the San Andrés Hospital. Since the beginning
of the XX century it has become the monastery of the Carmelitas. Its algarrobo
carved door it a jewel of Salta´s colonial art and was done by the
aborigines in 1762.
- Cathedral Basilica: images of the Lord and the Virgin
of the Miracle are kept there, the patron saints of the city since 1962.
Also, near the entrance door is the famous “Panteón de las
Glorias del Norte” (Pantheon of the northern glories), where they
lay, among others General Güemes and General Antonio de Arenales.
It was declared national historical monument in 1947.

The capital city has an important nightlife that Is concentrated in Balcarce
Street. Pubs and bars play music from Credence, national rock and roll
up to chill out and live bands that promise a night full of “rock
and roll”.
Purmamarca
Purmamarca means "Town of the Virgin Earth", in aimará
and it is a small town framed by spectacular hills of colors in Jujuy, unique in
all the country known as «The mountain of the seven colors».
In the main square one active artisan fair takes place, with typical handmade
products of the quebrada, such as carpets, diverse wood statues, local
clothes, vessels and medicinal plants. The small town is very attractive
because it is located on the base of incredible multicolor hills. It is
recommended to visit the old church, declared National Historical Monument,
built in 1648, on the main square. The town offers the traveler lodging
infrastructure, gastronomy and excursions.
Cuesta de Lipán - Salinas Grandes
Situated in the road that leads to the Paso de Jama, they are one of
the mayor depressions of Jujuy Province with more than 12.000 hectares
of salt in the open sky.
Tilcara
Here is the "pucara" (fortress) famous for being the best
one reconstructed of the Quebrada of Humahuaca, Jujuy. Tilcara
can be chosen as a basis to visit the quebrada because it has a good lodging
infrastructure: camping, hostels, hotels, restaurants and folkloric «peñas».
It has a Church built in 1797 but inaugurated in 1865 and the museum of
archaeology Dr. Eduardo Casanova, which has mommies and a collection of
elements of the cultures of Peru, Tiahuanaku, etc. that are worth visiting.
Humahuaca
It’s worth mentioning its narrow pebbled streets that you should
cross on foot, with its one-story houses that keep their historical features.
The Humahuaca Parade very popular among the local people is one of the
most famous and attracts locals and foreigners. It lasts 8 days and in
its preparations involves masks, costumes, colorful suits and rites. In
Humahuaca there is a wide range of museums that show craftworks, folklore,
paintings and sculptures. It has lodging infrastructure, restaurants and
excursions. Visit the Independence Monument and Tumbaya.
Iruya
Iruya is a little town situated almost 350 kilometers away from Salta
City that seems to be hanging from the mountains and suspended in time.
It is 2780 m.s above the sea level, and stands on a promontory in the
valley of the Iruya river. The road to Iruya has thousands of breathtaking
landscapes. The town keeps its steep, narrow streets paved with stones
and the thatched houses as well as the customs and clothes of 250 years
ago. In its environs you can find the pre-Columbian ruins of Titiconte.
One of its main attractions are the religious celebrations, like the celebration
of the Pachamama, where the pagan and the sacred are mixed.
